In the words of Isaac Newton “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction”.
At the beginning of the pandemic, many companies worldwide implemented hiring freezes and others had to let their staff go. The world was at a standstill and the thought of switching jobs did not cross many people’s minds in the midst of the lockdowns and companies letting people go.
As a result of this, there was an evident reluctance from employees to twist. The remote interviewing process and working with colleagues through Zoom for the foreseeable did not appeal to everyone and we saw much less mobility in the market.
This has been a common sentiment for almost 18 months now and because of this there is a large volume of employees who have remained in their current roles despite wanting a change. As stated above, every action has an equal and opposite reaction and there is an imminent wave of attrition on the horizon.
The Wave of Attrition
Industry experts believe that there is an imminent wave of attrition on the horizon and once the country fully reopens that a large volume of workers will be on the job market looking for their next challenge. The lack of mobility in the workforce in 2020 and 2021 will result in a hyper-mobile period in the coming months or in early 2022.
From our own perspective, having spoken with hundreds of candidates in the digital, design and marketing space in recent months, we would agree that there has been a high level of reluctance to make a move and candidates have been much more risk averse.
In our opinion, this trend will not continue much longer and many organisations will struggle to retain all their top talent as offers come knocking on the door.
What Can You Do?
As an employer, it is vital to have a strong relationship and understanding with your employees. It’s important to ask questions like:
- What motivates them?
- How satisfied are they in their current role?
- Is there enough professional development and career opportunities available to them?
- How important is flexible/remote working to them?
You can’t prevent an employee from leaving however, what you can do is try and make them not want to by understanding what drives them and satisfying these needs.
