Online advice on how best to format & structure is both plentiful and contradictory; based on reviewing 1000’s of Marketing, eCommerce, Product, Design and Data CVs annually, here is our take:
Tip 1: Statistics and Figures
In your work experience section, your quantifiable results are key! Hiring manager’s want to know what you can bring to the table and the most effective way to communicate this is through numbers.
For example, rather than simply stating that you wrote 10 blog posts, include what impact these blog posts had and how successful or unsuccessful they were. A more effective line would read that you wrote 10 blog that attracted 900 users, contributing to the 25% increase in organic traffic and readers spent on average 3 minutes on the page. This is much more impactful and shows that the content was a success and that you are a data-driven strategic thinker.
Tip 2: Keywords
If you can’t include all of your Tech Stack in your work experience section, then create a “Skills” section.
In this section, you should include any marketing tools or platforms that you used and how they supported you in achieving your goals. If you used Hootsuite to schedule social posts, Shopify to manage the website, Salesforce as the CRM and Google Analytics to track performance then include these details here.
Connexus Insight: The demand for Shopify experience and Paid Social Advertising experience has grown significantly over the past 12 months.
Tip 3: Relevant Passions, Hobbies, and Interests
If you are actively engaged in any groups or hobbies outside of work, it is worth including them at the bottom of your CV.
Connexus Insight: We have had clients seek candidates with specific hobbies and interests e.g., Golf and Equine.
This was due to the nature of the organisation and the level of industry knowledge that was required.
Bonus Tip 1: Apply These Tips to Your LinkedIn
-Recruiters use LinkedIn like a search engine and with this in mind, job seekers should apply the principles of SEO and include all relevant keywords to their profile.
This will let recruiters know exactly what your skills are and greatly increase your chances of being headhunted.
Bonus Tip 2: Include Your Mobile Number
It may sound obvious, but you would be surprised how many CVs with seeing that don’t include a contact number.
If you apply for a job, the recruiter or hiring manager may want to give you a call quickly for a chat.
Omitting your mobile number will make you less contactable and slow processes or even lead to missed opportunities if you miss an email.
