What has always been a difficult decision has been made even more difficult by the Global pandemic bringing a new plethora of factors to consider.

A high percentage of applicants we are currently speaking to are naturally more hesitant about the idea of changing job during a global pandemic.. This combined with the new onboarding process and remote working with colleagues you’ve never met can seem daunting. Whilst certain industry sectors have been devasted over the last 11 months, others are thriving and the volume of job and career opportunities available on the market today have never been higher.

We carried out an Employee Sentiment Survey at the end of 2020 which found that only 37.5% where not open to or planning on switching jobs in 2021. The full results of our survey can be found here.

Some roles are of course more in demand than others. In a recent blog,  we discussed how in 2020, there was a 143% increase in the number of people hired in eCommerce-related roles as well as a 118% increase in the number of Digital Content Freelancers hired.

If you feel that you have reached a Career Plateau, we are here to help offer you some key considerations that may help you in your decision.

1. Don’t Let the Pandemic be an Influencing Factor

We are approaching the 1-year anniversary of the first lockdown here in Ireland and since that lockdown and most companies have adapted and are continuing to trade as well as hire.

So if you feel that if there was no pandemic that you would be looking to twist, then go with that gut feeling as the world is still spinning and we are likely to be living with the virus in some capacity for the foreseeable future.

Some industries are more impervious to the virus that others and these can be found here on another recent blog of ours.

2. The Long Stint

One of the unfortunate effect of working in one company for an extended period can in certain instances make you less employable.

If you are also in the same company for an extended period of time but have failed to secure a promotion, this can suggest that a candidate is settled and perhaps not proactive and hungry to grow. If job hopping suggests a lack of dependability, the flipside of this is if you stay in the same role for too long that you may be dependent and comfortable without moving up the ladder.

3. Work-Life Balance

Feel like work is taking up more time than it should? If your work/life balance is not in sync it may be time to consider your options. Thankfully, many companies are offering some form of remote working moving forward which will enable us to spend more time with our family and less time commuting.

If you feel that you are unhappy with the level of flexibility around remote working in your current role then it may be worth considering other opportunities in more progressive organisations.

4. You’re not Challenged

If you’ve reached a point where you are becoming bored and finding work monotonous, chances are that you are not being challenged and therefore not growing and developing.

It’s easy to become comfortable however, you should be continuously growing and enhancing your skills while working. If you’re doing the same thing every week and not learning anything new then it may be time to look for a new challenge that will engage you and help you reach new career heights.
