LinkedIn have recently released a special report which focused on which roles experience the highest level of growth from April to October of 2020 compared to the previous year. They have then ranked the job categories based on growth and demand.
It is no surprise that the number 1 in demand and growing area is:
1. E-Commerce
In line with what we have reported in our own report on 2020, there was a 143% increase in the number of people hired in eCommerce related roles.
There is no question that this surge in demand was driven by the limitations placed on us by lockdowns and the spike in people shopping online globally as a result.
Virgin Media Research conducted a survey which found that 37% of respondents said they began shopping online for the first time at the start of the pandemic and 47% of respondents said they’re shopping more online than before due to the pandemic. (MII)
This shift in consumer behaviour is here to stay and so is the demand for these skills as we have seen from our own experience with clients over the past year.
2. Digital Content Freelancers
Digital content Freelancers grew by 118% in 2020 according to the recent LinkedIn report. When we think about the rise in popularity of Podcasts, Social Media Influencers and YouTube Bloggers in recent years and combine that with the lockdowns and the increase in time spent on our phones and digital devices it makes sense for this increased demand.
Lockdowns also curbed all face-to-face meetings, events and changed how companies do business. Leaving us with online as our only option and driving us to create more impactful and engaging content online in order to compete and adapt to the changing environment.
3. Social Media and Digital Marketing
To reiterate the previous paragraph, people were spending more time online and spending more online which brought with it the opportunity for companies to sell more online. This opportunity resulted in a 52% increase in people hired in Social Media and Digital Marketing roles.
Some of the common job titles in this area were Growth Hacker, Growth Specialist and Social Media Marketing Coordinator.
